PERIPLUS

Periplus (the Latin form) comes from the Greek peri (= about or around) and plous (voyage). In modern Greek, periplous means a "cruise" or "circumnavigation". The word almost certainly implied a definite or particular voyage, rather than a "coastal pilot" or "navigational guide". For example, Arrian's Periplus of the Black Sea, translated by Avienus as "Periplus Ponti Euxeni" described a voyage from Trapezus to Dioscurias which took place in 131-132 AD.
